Renowned Russian cellist Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky performs music by Schubert and Sofia Gubaidulina on an unusual recording for NCA.
Franz Schubert's much-loved 'Arpeggione' Sonata in A minor is usually played on the cello but on this disc Dowbusch-Lubotsky is accompanied by the guitar rather than the piano. Her partner here, Peter Constant, also takes the first guitar part in Gubaidulina's 'Repentance', written for the unfamiliar combination of cello, three guitars and double bass, a re-working in 2008 of an earlier orchestral piece.
Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky took part in the first Dutch performance of 'Repentance' in 2010. Sofia Gubaidulina has said of the cellist: Her total command of the instrument, her faultless intonation and a very high degree of all-round musicality allow her to give the best suited nuances and colours to works of the most diverse styles and epochs. She is rightly a soloist but also an enrichment for any ensemble.
Born in Saratov, Dowbusch-Lubotsky began playing the cello at the age of seven. She studied in Moscow and in Hamburg at the Hochschule f�r Musik und Theate, winning several prizes. Her concerts in the Netherlands, France, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Germany and Russia have all been well-received, and she's played at famous international music festivals such as Kuchmo and Savonlinna (Finland), Peter de Grote (Netherlands), and the New Jersey Festival (USA).
For several years now she has been playing chamber music with Mark Lubotsky and Dmitri Vinnik as a member of the Lubotsky Trio. In 2013 they recorded music by Alfred Schnittke on CD. Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky is particularly known for performing works by the contemporary composers Sofia Gubaidulina, Alexander Raskatov, Viktor Suslin and Valentin Silvestrov.
