'Africa/Brass' was John Coltrane's first album with a big band. The unique instrumentation included four French Horns, tuba, two euphoniums, two trumpets, three reed players, and a rhythm section including two bassists. The tight arrangements were primarily penned by Trane and McCoy Tyner and orchestrated by Eric Dolphy.
On these dates the great tenor (John Coltrane) was backed by groups ranging from nine to fourteen pieces, playing tunes arranged by Eric Dolphy. 'Africa' is the most memorable selection on an extended set. The music is quite rewarding and sometimes haunting. - ***** Scott Yanow, All Music
