This release presents Karas' 1949 Decca studio recordings containing music from The Third Man(this version of the main theme was a #1 hit for 11 weeks), plus the complete original soundtrack, along with a performance of the celebrated theme by Karas at London's Empress Club and the music from the movie's original trailer. As a bonus, six readings of the main theme by star performers such as Chet Atkins, Earl Bostic, Guy Lombardo, and Jonah Jones have been added, among them a rare vocal version. Lombardo's version was also a #1 hit for 11 weeks.

The Third Manis a 1949 British film noir directed by Carol Reed and written by Graham Greene. It stars Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, and Trevor Howard. The atmospheric use of black-and-white expressionist cinematography by Robert Krasker is a major feature of the film (that earned him an Oscar), combined with the iconic theme music by Anton Karas, seedy locations, and acclaimed performances from the cast. It is considered one of the best movies ever, and in 1999, the British Film Institute voted it the greatest British film of all time.
