It resembles Portuguese fado, but it is not the Creole version of that genre, which was looked on with scorn by the Portuguese colonists. Morna probably comes from lament, a style of singing brought from Angola by slaves. Its accents are rough and heart-rending. Etymologically, the word morna may come from the English verb to mourn, but its origin is obscure. Sailors probably developed its final form. Indeed, apart from Angolan chanting, it holds suggestions of Argentinian tango and Brazilian modinha.
