Arcangelo Corelli's fame as both violinist and composer was widespread throughout seventeenth century Europe. His surviving works are relatively few in number but far-reaching in influence, both in terms of performance practice and compositional technique. The twelve Opus 5 Sonatas for violin and continuo are notable for their juxtaposition of slow movements of a lyrical, elegant beauty akin to the human voice, and brilliant, technically demanding fast movements. Frenchman Fran?�ois Fernandez makes his debut recording for Naxos alongside experienced harpsichordist Glen Wilson, whose previous discs of Couperin (8555936) and Buxtehude (8557413) on Naxos both scooped a maximum three stars in the Penguin Guide.
