Antonin Dvorak's poignant Stabat Mater Op 58 is rightly one of the most popular and most frequently performed sacred works of the late Romantic period. Composed between February 1876 and November 1877 and premiered in Prague in 1880, this masterpiece was his first and most extensive sacred work. It is characterized by an often elegiac, but occasionally also dramatic tone. Both poles are perfectly realized in this recording by COVIELLO with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra and the Chorwerk Ruhr under Florian Helgath as well as an excellent ensemble of soloists.

'The choral singing is resonant and clear []. The soloists are well matched with the tenor, Sungmin Song, impressive in the hymn-like 'Fac me vere' movement, avoiding both sentimentality and an unsuitably operatic approach.' BBC Music Magazine (4 stars)
