The 1910s were a period of extraordinaryturbulence and change. Revolutions and warleft monarchies and empires fallen and thesocial order irreversibly altered. The music onthis album emerges from various points inthat eventful decade, but all of it recordsvividly a world that was shortly to vanishforever a world to which the year 1919 wasalready a coda.Indeed, the pieces chosen by Benjamin Bakerand Daniel Lebhardt for their second Delphianrecording also speak from a decade of musicalendings. Claude Debussy and Lili Boulangerboth died in 1918, two extraordinary careerscut short early; Baker and Lebhardtsprogramme includes some of their last works.Edward Elgar lived on for another fifteen years, but wrote little more to match the four majorcompositions which emerged from his pen in1918 and 1919.Leo Jancek, by contrast, was about to enteran astonishing Indian summer of creativity; hisviolin sonata stands on the cusp, inspired byJanceks hopes that the war might lead toindependence for his beloved Czech lands.
