In a way, Paris and jazz were always closely related. Jazz began to be heard in Paris in the early 1920s, when Prohibition and the rigors of racism caused many American musicians and artists of all disciplines to cross the ocean to enjoy the cultural freedom of the French capital. French jazz groups formed, the best being the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, led by Django Reinhardt and St�phane Grappelli. The love story was interrupted during World Word II, when the Nazi occupation declared jazz a depraved music. After the War, American jazzmen returned to Paris, and the romance has continued ever since.
