From Now On is a collection of six pieces - for six musicians, each composition small considerations or statements on current social and political events of our time; there are reflections on the pandemic period, like 'A Hymn For the '20s' (1920s), musically juxtaposed to our current 2020s, and the 'Plexi Encounters' - a looped groove that rides down the plexiglass barriers we found in all shops and places of public encounter. Overall, this is an album of musical reactions to modern life presented in a melodic jazz landscape.
Led by trombonist and composer Oyvind Braekke, this ensemble, which includes guitarist Jacob Young (ECM), represents a long-awaited forum for Braekke to compose for a smaller chamber format, a kind of music rooted in modern jazz, with inspirations from both American and European jazz influences from the last 40 years, yet mixed with elements of classical western music, rock, and folk. By August 2023, the band had already performed the music at twenty concert halls across Norway , Germany, and Austria.
The musicians in the group are all frequent instrumentalists and band leaders with projects on the Scandinavian Jazz scene as well as in Europe and other parts of the world.
