Some well-known colleagues commented on Wilhelm Backhaus as follows: Backhaus impressed the young Martha Argerich, who described the recording of the third Beethoven concerto with Karl Bohm and the Vienna Philharmonic as fantastic. In an interview Stephen Kovacevich said: In my opinion Backhaus was the only pianist who really understood Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata. Andor Foldes describes Backhaus' Beethoven cycle in Budapest in 1938 as the greatest musical education he could ever have received. And when 'The Guardian' asked Valentina Lisitsa which pianist (deceased or living) she would choose if she could only hear one, she said simply WiIhelm Backhaus.
