Howard Griffiths has recorded a fascinating collection of symphonic music from Turkey together with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin for PROSPERO CLASSICAL.

Griffiths has decided to record a colorful and expressive bouquet of Turkish symphonic music for this album, giving a stage to representatives of the Turkish Five and Ferit Tuzun as a composer of the next generation, and then presenting examples of music as it is composed today by Turkish composers, including the world-famous pianist and composer Fazil Say.

Fazil Say's Sahmeran op. 85 for cello, percussion and orchestra takes as its starting point the Anatolian legend of the snake queen Sahmeran, whose realm is discovered by a young man who promises to keep his discovery a secret, but then betrays her and provokes her death. In the first part, Say opulently depicts the realm of the Snake Queen and in the second, more emotional part, the betrayal. Say knows very well what he can get out of the orchestra in terms of effects and colours, and he does it masterfully.
