This release journeys through three expressive chamber works, led by Brahms's brooding Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60. Often linked to Goethe's Werther, its restless opening, driving Scherzo, lyrical Andante, and stormy finale create a powerful emotional arc. Penderecki's Cadenza for solo viola, an intense companion piece, explores a falling semitone motif with extremes of whispered harmonics and fiery virtuosity. Written in 1984, it builds on his Viola Concerto's material. Hindemith's Viola Sonata, Op. 11 No. 4, blends Germanic
depth with French-tinged colour, its counterpoint and
lyricism showcasing a composer equally adept in complexity
and folk-like charm.
