For the first time, Franz Liszt's most extensive oratorio 'Christus' can be heard in this recording from Merseburg Cathedral with the instruments in use at the time of its premiere in 1873 and including the Ladegast organ from 1855, which Liszt held in high esteem. In combination with the acoustics of Merseburg Cathedral, which have remained unchanged since the 19th century, the result is a sound impression that Liszt experienced on his repeated visits to the imperial cathedral. Conducted by Michael Schonheit, the renowned soloists Susanne Bernhard, Kathrin Goring, Tobias Berndt and Hugo Mallet, the Collegium Vocale Leipzig and the Dresden Philharmonic Choir dedicate themselves to this musical endeavour. The Merseburg Court Music Ensemble, which has special ties to the musical history of this place, performs on precious original instruments from the 19th century.
