The great tenor saxophonist Bobby Wellins is featured with his quartet that has been regularly working together for the past five years. Wellins has been a major voice on the UK jazz scene for decades his haunting beautiful sound instantly recognisable. Even though he is now in his seventies his playing consistently improves year on year and few would disagree that he is now playing better than ever.
Mark Edwards has quietly made a name for himself as a highly creative, yet accessible pianist. His contribution to this quartet goes way beyond just being an ideal accompanist to Bobby Wellins' explorations, contributing fantastic solos which illustrate the passion for music and connection he makes with both the other musicians and audience.
Andrew Cleyndert is a leading light on the bass scene in the UK, featured with many bands over the years and recently most notable for his contribution to Stan Tracey's music. And, Spike Wells' association with Bobby Wellins goes back a long way. Apart from Stan Tracey, it is difficult to find a more perfect partner for Bobby's musical nature, and Spike never fails to pull the best music from Bobby.
The album 'Snapshot' was recorded over a series of concerts, the material selected to give a snapshot of the diverse musicality of the quartet. As with all of the Trio releases the sound quality is superb, the live settings giving an extra edge to the music.
