Philipp Mathmann; Capella Jenesis; Gerd Amelung - Tormenti d'amore: Works by Scalabrini, Reutter Jr., Hasse & Porsile

On this 2-CD set, hear premiere recordings of cantatas by Anton Ulrich and sonatas by Johann Adolf Hasse, performed by Philipp Mathmann (soprano) together with the specialist ensemble for early music capella, Jenensis, conducted by Gerd Amelung.

Anton Ulrich of Saxe-Meiningen travelled to Vienna in 1724 � a fruitful journey according to the Meiningen Music Archive. The youngest son of Duke Bernhard became deeply immersed in the musical life of the city, and during his time in Vienna, he had copies made of many pieces of music to be catalogued. As a result, a huge collection of 107 manuscripts composed in Vienna between 1710 and 1740, including 297 vocal works, have been recorded, several of which exclusively exist in the Meiningen Archive.

Of the 170 plus cantatas in this collection, four are recorded here, three of which can only be found in the Meiningen Archive. In addition, there are two sonatas by Johann Adolf Hasse. Though the two sinfonias are published under his name too, further musicological research has concluded that the sinfonias were actually written by Paolo Scalabrini, Court Conductor in Copenhagen.
