This new, all-star octet, led by the award-winning multi-instrumentalist Alan Barnes, is on sparkling form with a new studio recording performing 12 specially commissioned charts from the pen of internationally acknowledged Ellington expert, Tony Faulkner. The selection showcases lesser known material, but each piece is an absolute gem from the Duke canon. The musicians, all major names and soloists, include Tony Coe, Bruce Adams and Andy Panayi, are united in their love of and ability to interpret Ellington's music. The brilliant written arrangements are peppered with their improvised solos. The superb writing and playing enable this small group to wield the power and dynamics of a big band in this inspired studio session.
