Formed in 2004, US band Snarky Puppy has created a serious buzz among musicians and non-musicians alike. Led by bassist and primary composer Michael League, the band draws upon a variety of musical traditions compositionally including jazz, funk, fusion and electronica. Tell Your Friends, their dynamic release from 2010, is a combined CD and DVD set recorded live in the studio and captures the essence of a group which is somewhere between a jam band and a musical collective.
Recorded and filmed in front of a small audience, Tell Your Friends mixes composition and improvisation over eight adventurous, yet accessible, pieces of music and highlights the exuberance of a unit that sometimes has as many as 25 players in regular rotation from Dallas and New York City. The core of the group, which remains consistent, features Grammy Award-winners Robert Sput Searight on drums (God's Property, Snoop Dogg) and Shaun Martin on keyboards (Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu), as well as organ prodigy Cory Henry (Kenny Garrett, Kim Burrell) and multi-instrumentalist Louis Cato (Marcus Miller, Q-Tip, George Duke).
