I first heard a Rhodes piano in the song Riders onthe Storm by The Doors, Aleksander Nowak recalls. The characteristic keyboard part was performed in that piece by Ray Manzarek. Directly before composing my work, I listened to The Bill Evans Album and to Ray Charles, Nowak adds. Marcin Stanczyk says: Its sound [Fender Rhodes piano]has fascinated me! he admits. Id only previouslyknown the Rhodes from recordings by jazz (Hancock,Peterson, Brecker), rock (Led Zeppelin), and even pop(Jackson) musicians. The pianist who brought these composers together,Piotr Orzechowski, came across the Rhodes whenlistening to Miles Davis. It sounded like an alternative for the rather hermetic world of the piano.Orzechowski invited the composers over to his homecity of Cracow, where they had a chance to get acquainted with the instrument (a late 1970s model). The Fender Rhodes piano has a wooden keyboardsimilar to that of a grand piano, and a hammer action system. This electro-acoustic instrument is not equipped with electronic sound generators, and its sound colour is monolithic making this a unique recording.
