With their stimulating debut for Babel, 23-year-old trumpeter and composer Tom Arthurs' quintet Centripede highlights the inventive energy at the centre of the thriving improvisational UK underground jazz scene. Part of London's bold F-IRE collective, Centripede's eponymous CD is influenced by the dance rhythms of global music: from Africa to Eastern Europe, contemporary classical, electronica, and left field jazz taking in Gil Evans, Django Bates though to Steve Coleman and Kenny Wheeler, Centripede are a fierce collective in every sense.
