A.L. 'Bert' Lloyd was one of the larger than life characters of the English Folk Scene. Along with Ewan MacColl he was one of the architects of the Folk Revival in the early 1950s. His interest in folk song began when, at the age of 15, he went to Australia where he worked on the sheep stations in the outback. He also spent time on an Antarctic whaling ship in the 1930s. On settling back in England he worked for the Picture Post and the BBC. He became one of our leading folklorists, published several books (including The Penguin Book Of English Folk Songs a collaboration with Ralph Vaughan Williams), made many recordings, became artistic director of the leading folk label, Topic, and was the mentor and inspiration for many leading singers of the Revival including Martin Carthy, The Watersons, Anne Briggs, Peter Bellamy and many others. This double CD has one disc of English folk songs and another of Australian. They were recorded in 1956 and are extremely rare.
