Strongly melodic original compositions. Fresh and contemporary approach to violin playing in the jazz idiom. Subtle synthesis of world music, classical and jazz influences.Best known for her work with 2007 Mercury Nominees Basquiat Strings, young Scottish violinist Vicky Fifield here leads her own quartet on their self titled debut album Vicky Fifield & Devotion.Originally formed during the summer of 2006 in the midst of the Edinburgh Festival, the band brings together some of the country's most exciting and creative talents - award winning guitarist Graeme Stephen, young bass player Euan Burton, Canadian drummer Chris Wallace with Fifield on violin. Coming from a mixed background of classcial, jazz and folk music, Fifield's compositions display elements derived from all of these styles presented in a uniquely melodic and accessible way.Rather than inhabiting the traditional jazz violin territory of Grappelli etc where the instrument and its virtuosic capabilities often take centre stage, her musical vision is much wider, using the violin as a tool to express her distinctive musical personality. Although the music is very much her own personal vision, the band are given a lot of freedom within the music with strong soloing from all players featuring throughout the album.
