The word 'legendary' is often overused. Indeed, I have been guilty of this on many occasions. However, Pete Seeger, looms above everybody else that one can think of in modern folk music. Even nearly 4yrs after his death at the age of 94, his memory is revered, with the respect shown to few others in his field. He was an openly political figure in American music at a time when few dared to stick their heads above the parapet, and was probably the most prominent singer of protest music until one of his disciples, Bob Dylan, joined him in singing against injustice and inequality. This is one of his most beloved records: a Christmas record telling the story of The Nativity rather than warbling nonsense about red nosed reindeer. As always, Seeger sang with heartfelt conviction, and - despite the story he is telling being 2 millennia old - does so with some of the most touching humility that this extraordinary performer ever showed!
