Produced by award winning film and music maker Deeyah, 'Iranian Woman' is the second release in a series of albums celebrating traditional music forms as expressed through the voices and artistry of women.
This latest releases focuses on the music of Iranian women and their struggle for artistic expression in their own land. Under a regime that currently represses women from performing in public places, the contemporary artists in this collection are the standard-bearers for a tradition of Persian music making by women that stretches back some 3000 years.
Featured among the thirteen artists presented on the CD are Sussan Deyhim, Sepideh Raissadat, Mahsa Vahdat, Mamak Khadem, Marjan Vahdat and Azam Ali, all of whom have international profiles through touring and album releases.
The 'woman' series is my way of honouring and celebrating women. It is my personal exploration through the indigenous and traditional music of their lands. This anthology is a tribute to the women of Iran, especially their courage, and to their exquisite and rich musical heritage. It is with pride, humility and a deep sense of gratitude and admiration, that I present the voices of contemporary Iranian women. - Deeyah
