Russell has written songs for such well-known country artists as Suzy Bogguss, Jerry Jeff Walker, Nanci Griffith, Johnny Cash and Joe Ely.The songs on this record centre around a California theme, and they mix Russell's picturesque folk sagas with songwriting contributions from Peter Case, Chris Gaffney and Dave Alvin. The Woody Guthrie-esque Somebody's Husband, Somebody's Son features a vocal verse-swapping trio of Russell, Alvin and Case.
