Robert Mitchell 3io has its roots in its leader's long-running band, Panacea. Drummer Richard Spaven and bassist Tom Mason are the rhythm section of Panacea and together with Robert, have quietly been developing a real signature in the traditional jazz piano trio format. Over the years the trio has honed its mix of influences (song, odd metre, freeform jazz, broken beat, hip-hop, folk) with older and more modern jazz/electronica/rock. 'The Greater Good' features arrangements of tunes by Massive Attack (Teardrop), and the famously sampled Galt MacDermot (composer of Hair), along with five Mitchell originals, a tune each by Tom and Richard, and Wayne Shorter's Dance Cadaverous.Robert Mitchell was a graduate of Tomorrow's Warriors and Gary Crosby's Nu Troop, and has forged a formidable reputation as a gifted pianist and composer. As part of the prestigious F-ire Collective, Robert won the Jazz on 3 Innovation Award at the 2004 BBC Jazz Awards. He's played/recorded with names such as Norma Winstone, Steve Coleman, Courtney Pine and Steve Williamson, in addition to leading the six-piece Panacea. Panacea has released two albums on Dune records and F-IRE in 2005 and he has recorded a solo album and a duo with Cuban violinist Omar Puente.Personnel: Robert Mitchell (piano), Tom Mason (bass), Richard Spaven (drums)
