Blowing across the neck of a jug or bottle that acted as a resonator produced a bass buzz that gave bottom to a tune. Bands using such instruments were popular in the southern USA in the 1920s. Two of the greatest were situated in Memphis: the Memphis Jug Band and Gus Cannons Jug Stompers. The recordings by these two ensembles were not only highly commerically successful in their day, they influenced the folk scene of the late 1950s and '60s. For instance, Gus Cannon's Walk Right In was converted into an international pop/folk hit by The Rooftop Singers in 1963, and John Sebastian - who himself began his music career with a jug band - did a similar transition job on Cannon's Prison Wall Blues, re-writing it as Younger Girl for The Lovin' Spoonful. Both of Cannon's Jug Stompers' original recordings are included on this 98 track, 4CD set, which is the most comprehensive and authoritative survey to date of a delightfully boisterous part of blues history. As usual with JSP box sets, there is an extensive essay with biographical and discographical detail, expert remastering, all at an affordable price.Full track listing attached.
