Jo Stafford was one of the most popular female vocalists in America during the 1940s and first half of the '50s with a string of hits, first nationally then internationally. She first sang professionally with her two sisters before teaming up with two male vocal groups to form an octet called The Pied Pipers. It was with the Pipers she first recorded in 1939, the following year - reformed as a quartet - they joined Tommy Dorsey's touring revue. During the two years with Dorsey she made her first solo recordings, leading to a contract with the newly formed Capitol Records and solo stardom.
