When Ottilie Patterson appeared at the Royal Festival Hall in 1955 with Chris Barber's Jazz Band George Melly described her as Bessie Smith reincarnated. For the next 20 years she remained with the Barber band before retiring through ill health. In that time she became Britain's best loved Trad Jazz singer - and still held in great affection today - moving her style beyond the Vaudeville Blues of Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey to encompass the Gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Alex Bradford and the R&B of Ruth Brown and Memphis Minnie. This CD charts that development, includes 11 tracks never previously released and three songs never recorded by Ottilie anywhere else. Lake's previous CD devoted to Ottilie Patterson became the best selling CD in the 23 history of the label.
