Cab Calloway (1907-1994) was one of the most versatile and charismatic showmen of the 20th Century. He excelled as a bandleader, vocalist, dancer, actor and was an exuberant all-round entertainer, whose show business career spanned over 60 years. Visually he offered far more to his audiences than any other bandleader. Dress in white, yellow or powder-blue 'Zoot' suits, baggy narrow bottomed trousers, long drape jackets, with a huge wide-brimmed hat and floor-trailing watch chain, he gyrated in front of the band to such good effect that he would probably have achieved as much success if his musicians had been second rate. However, although Cab's orchestra was primarily built around his vocal and comedic talents it featured first-rate soloists throughout its existence, as proven by the 104 swinging performances on this truly hep box-set.
