Maja Weber - JS BACH: Cello Suites 1-6

Bach's six suites for cello solo are amazingly multifaceted iconic works that still dominate the repertoire of cellists. As is so often the case with Bach, the suites are also compositional teaching pieces; all six are subject to a constant change of keys, variations, rhythms, reversals, moods and timbres.Now the Swiss cellist Maja Weber has taken on this musical universe. This is thanks to the encounter with an exceptional instrument: the Stradivari cello Bonamy Dobree-Suggia 1717. The cellist Hancock played it, the English scholar and eponym Bonamy Dobree owned it. This precious cello began its journey with ownership by the mysterious, divinely Portuguese Guilhermina Suggia (1885�1950), who fused technical perfection and soulful interpretation with her favourite cello and enchanted her audience with warm and deep tones. After Suggia's death the cello was sold and the proceeds went to fellows of the Royal Academy of Music. The Stradivari cello Bonamy Dobree-Suggia is now part of the collection of the Swiss Stradivari Foundation Habisreutinger.
