'Live at Riverhouse' finds saxophonist Martin Speake and his group in inspired form, beautifully interpreting a set of little heard tunes with a sublime lyricism and tenderness that is simply enchanting.
Following the 2008 release of the widely acclaimed 'Generations' on Speake's Pumpkin label, 'Live at The Riverhouse' is the second recording of this band and documents a continuation of their tradition of improvising on standards, made to sound more than a little different by Speake's subtle and thoughtful arrangements, and this accomplished, committed, group of improvisors.
The album was recorded live at the atmospheric Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames, a venue perfectly suited to a band, which works best when playing acoustically. It captures the group in wonderfully inventive form on tunes such as Smile, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and even Frank Sinatra's least favourite tune Strangers in the Night.
