When Bluegrass singer Harley Red Allen turned 33 on February 12, 1963, his career was at a crossroads. The Kentucky born singer and guitarist had already enjoyed a fair amount of success including a Top 15 country record. But in 63, times were tough for Bluegrass. The Rock 'n' Roll of the 50s had almost killed Bluegrass as a commercial entity and the festival phenomenon of the 70s had not yet begun its resuscitation of the music. However, in the face of this adversity, Red Allen was about to embark on an astonishing four year burst of creativity and recording that would forever anchor his reputation as one of the most intense, hard-edged and soulful lead singers in the annals of Bluegrass. The 23 tracks on this CD are culled from sessions and LPs recorded in 1963 and 1965 for the Rebel and Melodeon recording companies and include five previously unreleased cuts.
