This work by Robat Arwyn was commissioned by the National Eisteddfod of Wales and first performed by Bryn Terfel, Mari Wyn Williams and the Eisteddfod Youth Choir in 2005. The work is a modern day musical, telling the tragic story of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last native Prince of Wales, and his marriage to Eleanor de Montford. The composer, Robat Arwyn explains: At the end of the 90s, I was asked to compose a song to celebrate my old school's centenary celebration at Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, and there I met Bryn Terfel, who was singing at the event. At the end of the concert whilst we were having some refreshments, Bryn mentioned the fact that one of his dreams was to play Prince Llywelyn in a musical. A few years later, when the National Eisteddfod commissioned the work for 2005, I was told that Bryn would lead the Eisteddfod line up. That cup of tea with the baritone from Pantglas years earlier stuck in my memory, and became the inspiration for Er Hwylio'r Haul. The work took 18 months to complete. With sixteen tracks, Er Hwylio'r Haul offers variety and freshness, in the form of solos, duets, choral singing, plus the infamous voice of John Ogwen, as a storyteller.
