In early February 2003, the five of us huddled around a loudspeaker in a recording studio in Dublin. The sound coming from the speaker was the voice of our mother, Patty Black, singing songs that were familiar; songs that had been sung to us from the time we were children. The voice was frailer than we remembered, yet it was still brimful with humour, joy and mischief.
