Zanzibar: Music of Celebration is an impressive set of recordings assembled from among the many treasures of the National Sound Archive. Performances by local musicians on Zanzibar are an essential ingredient of most celebrations and the music on this CD provides a variety of styles and a glimpse of the ethnic, religious and gender compositions of this island culture. Of the unique musical styles of Zanzibar taarab, a style of music played for entertainment at weddings and other festive occasions and maulidi, generally a more sober religious performance style celebrating the birth of Prophet Mohammed are both featured here.
