'At the Watermill' is a joyful, straightahead session which sees top American saxophonist / clarinettist Ken Peplowski collaborate with award winning UK reedsman Alan Barnes. As with most releases on the label, the album features un-hackneyed material and, in this instance, a refreshing variety of instrumental combinations.
Amongst these are two compositions by Horace Silver, a tune each from Al Cohn and Pee Wee Russell, two Brazilian flavoured pieces and the Ellingtonian flagwaver, Perdido. Also on board is the superb rhythm section of John Pearce (piano), Dave Green (double bass) and Steve Brown (drums), best known for their long association with another fine saxophonist, Scott Hamilton.
Personnel: Ken Peplowski (clarinet, tenor saxophone), Alan Barnes (clarinet, bass clarinet, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone), John Pearce (piano), Dave Green (double bass), Steve Brown (drums)
